Green toads
Green toads

Amphibians are among the most endangered animal groups in Austria and worldwide. One example of this is the endangered green toad, a distinctly pioneer species. In Austria, its main distribution area is in eastern Austria.

Our goal
Our goal

The declared aim of the Pond initiative is to create a large number of spawning waters for the Green toad - and other pioneer species of small bodies of water. In addition to our target species, Yellow and Fire-bellied toads, Common toads and even Natterjack toads (threatened with extinction in Austria) could also use such waters, depending on the environment and altitude.

The animal species you are looking for here include all invertebrates (e.g. insects) that you have removed from the pond water using a dip net and transferred to the test plate. If you find spawn (i.e. amphibian eggs) in spawning strings or even spawn balls, tadpoles or other age stages of amphibians on the test plate, please return them to the pond immediately. Now please take a photograph of the test plate with the invertebrates on it. If possible, please make sure that the photograph is in focus so that the animals are clearly recognisable. This will give us an initial overview of the invertebrates present in your pond at the time of sampling. The invertebrates are then carefully placed one by one with the tweezers into the sample tube, which is then tightly closed.
