• Scientific name: Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa

Not an amphibian, but their chirping sometimes suggests otherwise.

Description

These insects reach a body length of 3.5 to 5.0 centimetres, the females are smaller than the males. The body is reddish-brown to black and dark brown in colour. Their front legs, which have been transformed into strong digging shovels, make them the only species in their family to be unmistakable in Central Europe.

Habitat

Like all mole crickets, European mole crickets live in self-dug burrow systems in the ground.

Call

During the mating season, they produce long-lasting, buzzing "rrrrrr" noises through stridulation.
